Civil War

The date is June 19th, 1863, and I don't know what's go on. My sister fled to the north with her husband two month ago. Then late week he tried to shot my head off when the North soldiers took over our house. What is up with him?????? My family has been nothing but kind to him. What is go on here??? Is there really a new state called West Virgina??? Mom says we are living in it. But how can that be when we live in Virgina and we are part of the South army. Dan keeps saying that we are now part of the North. I didn't know but my main question is why is there a north and a south????
