Child Labor

Who could ever guess that children friendly companies like Gap, Nike, and Disney are using child labor to make their products? What about Apple? You know the computers, mobile phones, and of course iPods.
In February 2010 Apple admitted using 15-year-old to make their computers, mobile phones and IPods. About eleven teenagers were found in different factories. Although Apple would not say the name of the offended factories or their location. A majority of Apples products are made in China.
Apples says there are no longer any children being used in their factories, and that they are investigating how an under aged persons was able to gain employment. But are they really? How many other companies have many a change in their ways to that no under age child are working for them? Did Apple just say that so that people would have no problem buying their product?
What I want to know is, is there anyone trying to stop child labor in the world? When will it stop? Can the USA help stop it or are we secretly using child labor too? (Moore)

Why Can’t Humans Drink Seawater?

Human are about 60 percent water. We should drink about eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day. So why can’t we drink water directly from the sea? That water should be the same as drinking from a fresh water lake, right? Wrong. Drinking seawater is highly dangerous to humans. It contains large amounts of sodium, which make it dangerous to drink.
Too much sodium in your body actually doesn’t allow it to work properly. High sodium levels lead the body to state of dehydration. In the case of the stranded sailors, drinking the seawater will only endanger their health. As sodium levels increase in the body major organs, especially the kidneys, fail to work properly. The sailors will start feeling thirstier, dry in the mouth, and won’t need to go to the bathroom as much. Severe dehydration can lead to death.
You may think all is lost for these stranded sailors. If they have the knowledge and equipment, they can actually separate the sodium from the water using evaporation. By doing this procedure, they can safely drink the water without concern for the sodium levels. While water is one of the most important necessitates to the body, you need to be cautious about what is in it.

The Difference is Me

What if we lived in a world where we are all the same? We all liked the same things, wore the same clothes, and lived in identical houses. What kind of a life would that be? A very boring life. Differences brings variety into the world. Without it it's just a monochromatic existence.
I respect the differences in people, because they help define who I am. An example is my sister and me. Although we look alike, we are very different people. I have my own style, habits, likes, dislikes, friends, and ideas. Those things show my identity. Yet I appreciate the fact that we aren't alike in every way. The differences make us an individual, and that is very important to me.
When I look into the future, I don't see it following the same direction expressed by the author Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. His writings seem dull and gloomy. I think of his perceived world, as a living prison. In prison you wear the same clothes, eat the same meals, and do the same activities. I would not last a day in that world. Prison does not allow you to explore, create, and be yourself. In Vonnegut's world, the characters were compared to the less intelligent minds. They become prisoners to their less intelligent minds, therefore never living up to their full potential. George has to wear a handicapped because the government thinks smarter people take advantage of their brains. Hazel is one of the not so smart people do she can’t think about one thing for very long.
I have been raised to be my own person. My parents encourage me to try new things, so I can define myself. While I may compare myself to others, I use my assessment to grow. I want to live up to my full potential, by letting the colors of who I am shine. We all have the right to be who we want to be.

Misunderstanding

It's a gloomy Friday. The day the choir and Spanish 1 kids go to a concert and to a restaurant. Someone had told me that we were leaving right after first hour. I was wrong. While talking to Mrs. Mitchell to see what I was going to miss, she said, “Well the email I got said that you were leaving at 9:30, and not after first hour.”
Oh no, if we are leaving at 9:30 then I need my oboe!!! My Friday just turned for great to bad. Great now what am I going to do. I could call my dad, but he has to help out my Aunt today, great. Mom is already at work so she’s no help. As I’m walking to first hour, I see my friend Sam. She is also going on the field trip so I walk up to her.
“Hey, are you ready for the field trip?” she asks.
“No.” I replied, “We don’t leave until 9:30 and I left my oboe at home!”
“What I thought we were leaving right after first hour.” She replied.
“No, Mrs. Mitchell said demised from class at 9:15 and we are leaving at 9:30.” I told her.
“Oh no!! I left my saxophone at home!” She replied.
“Well at least we both left our instruments at home.” I said
“Hey I guess you’re right.” She said. “And Mrs. Mitchell will understand.”
“I hope so. See you later.” I said
“Bye.” She replied.
Well at least I have nice teachers and great friends. I just hope nothing else going wrong.

Prompt 1

What happens to a human's body temperature change when exposed to very warm temperatures? In 1774 Dr. Matthew Dobson was asking himself this question. He did an experiment where he and his friends stayed in a room that kept getting warmer and warmer. We do not know what Dr. Dobson exact hypothesis. What he found was the body temperature did not change. Did he realize the impact of evaporation on this experiment?

Humans are mammals, which means we are warm blooded. Our body has the ability to maintain its normal temperature, regardless of the outside temperature. In this experiment, the men continued to increase the room temperature. As the room grew warmer, they began to sweat. Sweating is a way for the body to control it's temperature, by cooling the body. As you sweat, your skin gets wet. This leads to evaporation.

The evaporation of the sweat allows the body to control its temperature. During this process, water in the sweat turns into a gas. The gas moves away from the body, taking some heat with it. Sweat glands are in several spots throughout the body including forehead, neck, back, arm pits, chest, and even the feet. As the millions of sweat molecules respond, the body is cooled.

The room conditions for Dr. Dobson's experiment must have been just right. If the environment had been too humid, the results could have been completely different. Under the right conditions, the human body has the ability to control its temperature, and so much more.

Obsession

Grace's obsession over wolfs has left her no choice but to risk her life, family, and friendships many times over. Although Grace is human and is not supposed to know about the werewolves, she feels that it is up to her to save them. Grace is the daughter of Lewis Brisbane is the book, "Shiver" from the Mercy Falls series. She is one of the main characters in the book. Others include her lover, Sam Roth. Sam has a horrible past, as his parent are in jail. He becomes obsessed with Grace after his pack attacks her. Sam is a werewolf, but he saved Grace from his pack when they tried to kill her. He did this because time and time again Grace risked her life, and many other things to protect the wolf pack. She kept Sam in her house so he could get better after he was shot. She tried to help Jack with his changing problems, but she also tried to keep the pack for getting hurt by the hunters who were after them. Grace even steps in to save lives when Sam is shot, as shown when she is thinking, "I had to pry his hands away from his neck. There was too much blood to see the wound, so I pressed one of the dishcloths over the mess of red that stretched from his chin to his collarbone. It was well beyond my first-aid abilities. 'Hold this.'" This is a quote from the book were Grace gets Sam to the hospital after he was shot. Grace tries with the help of Sam and Jack to find a cure for the wolfs, but will it mean losing someone she holds dear?

Shiver

Some friends come and go. Then there is that one, true friend who becomes your life long friend. Someone that would do anything for you, and you would do anything for them. Sam is a werewolf. He becomes human in the spring when the weather is becomes warm. Throughout their friendship, Sam and Grace are there for each other during times of sadness, and good times too. They want to help and protect each other. This need to help and protect extends to their family and friends. This is shown in the book, "Shiver" when Grace thinks, "Best-case scenario was that she need help with her homework or something. I had a reputation for being good at math, so it was sort of a possible. Worst case was that she wanted to talk about Jack. Sam had said that the only rule the pack had was that they didn't talk to about werewolves to outsiders. I wasn't about to break that rule." Grace knew that is someone found out about the werewolves, they might take them away and possible hurt them. Since the pack was important to Sam, it was important to Grace. This action will leave a impression on both Sam and Grace. They will always remember the loyalty they shared between them.

No Gold Can Stay

The meaning of the poem "No Gold Can Stay" by Robert Frost is that life is short, and ever changing. It is important to realize that the changes can be good or bad. How we deal with the changes will influence those around us. When some people learn they are dying, they rush around trying to put experiences into their life. If you live each day remembering that life is short, you'll know to make the best of it. You need to cherish it, because one day will be your last day.

To Build A Fire - Plan Ahead

Have you ever jumped into freezing water? Every New Year's Day hundreds of people jump into Lake Michigan wearing just their swimsuit. I participated in a similar activity. As a Girl Scout I wanted to earn a badge. At summer camp, we jump into the lake early one morning to meet the badge requirement. I froze my butt off! I remember feeling numb as I came out of the water. It was cold in the water, even in summer. Sometimes we do things for fun, but don't always think about what may happen afterwards.
In to Build a Fire, the man goes for a walk by himself in the middle of a winter night to meet the boys at the fort. In the dark, he ends of falling through the ice. His hands and feet become numb, and he feels like they are disconnected from his body. The man tries to build a fire, but fails. Panic runs through him, as the numbness spreads. He decides to give in by laying on the cold ground, and falling asleep. The man made several mistakes during the night, which led to him freezing to death.
His focus was on the fun he had planned, and not on planning for his outing. My father always says, "Failing to plan is planning to fail." This story proves that statement to be right. As he lay dying, he remembered being told to plan for the coldness. His decision to ignore the advise, for the fun was blinding him of common sense. Think before you act for it may come back to haunt you.

My Constellation

Apollo, the God of light, insulted Eros, the God of love. In revenge Eros took away Apollo’s first love, Daphne. Hundreds of years pass. Eros married a mortal woman named Psyche. Eros approaches Zeus and begs for him to turn Psyche into a God. Zeus grants Eros his request.
Eros and Psyche were playing in the forest when the sad and depressed Apollo walked by.
“Hi Apollo. How are you in this fine day?” asked Psyche.
“Great. Perfectly fine,” replied Apollo sarcastically.
Apollo continued to walk on with a look of longing on his face. When he was out of sight Psyche turned to Eros.
“Poor Apollo. He looks so sad,” said Psyche.
“That is what he deserves. Apollo insulted me, and so he will never have a true love,” vowed Eros.
“I think you have punished him enough. He has had several loves, but has never found a wife. Apollo has no one to share his life with,” insisted Psyche.
Eros asked, “Why are you so concerned about Apollo?”
“I think it’s sad, that a God like he should be alone for eternity,” Psyche said sadly. She continued, “I find such comfort having you in my life, through good times, and bad. I think a married God is a stronger God; happier too!”
Later that day, Eros walks to the water, and sits on the sand. He thinks about the conversation he had earlier in the say with Psyche. Eros realizes that she is right, as he as been much stronger since meeting her.
Eros goes to the bay where Daphne lives in the form of a tree. He approaches her father, Peneus. Eros talks to him and asks him to change his daughter back into human form. Peneus too wants his daughter back. He has always feared that his daughter would be alone, and unloved in life. Now that he knows there is someone waiting for Daphne, he agrees to turn her back into human form.
Eros and Peneus agree to change Daphne the following day. Eros goes to Apollo to convince him to come with him to the bay. They travel together back to the bay. At first, Apollo is unsure about what is going to happen. He sees Eros with a silver arrow. He remembers many years ago, that Eros used a lead arrow to shoot Daphne, causing her to despise love. He had been shot with a gold arrow, which made him fall in love with Daphne. Since she despised love, she ran away from him, leaving Apollo heartbroken.
“Apollo, I brought you here today to right a wrong. It is time to bring love back into your life,” states Eros.
As Eros picks up a silver arrow, he signals Peneus to reverse the spell on Daphne. As Daphne returns to a human form, Eros releases the arrow and shoots her in the heart with the silver arrow. Picking up the gold arrow, he waits until Daphne is looking at Apollo. When they see each other, Eros draws back quickly, and fires again at Daphne. The gold arrow has the same affect on Daphne as it did on Apollo; love at first sight.
Daphne and Apollo run toward each other, realizing their lives are meant to be together. Psyche, comes out free behind the trees, and congratulates the new couple. She turns to her husband and says, “Well done!”
Apollo goes up to Eros and says, “Thank you for letting me have a second chance. From this day forward, your bow and arrow shall be in the stars showing they are superior to mine.”
From that day on, you could see the gold arrow and trusty bow as a constellation on stars in the nighttime sky.
