School is cool
School is mean
Sometimes you wish
You didn't have to do anything
Just sit back, relax and enjoy the show
"Til the teacher asks for the answer
You wish for no homework, no tests, and more importantly no school.
But then it goes by
Year after year
Grade after grade
School after school
By then you're no longer small
But big and strong
You take on the beast head on
Oh..... Where did the time go?
I don't know
At the beginning you were making new friends
Then it was trying new things
Next was balancing everything
Now its planning for your future
But you've got to answer some big questions
Like what do you want to be?
A vet
A firefighter
A police officer
A teacher
A writer
A painter
An explorer
Do you want to travel before the beast?
Do you want to have kids after the beast?
Do you want a house during or after?
There's so many questions to answer and many others to ask
You're probably thinking "How can I do all this?"
Well you've been training or planning without even thinking
Through school
All the homework
All the field trips
All the tests
All the activities
Everything you've done in the past has prepared you for future or the beast
Or as we parents like to call it collage.
We've prepared you for it and for so much more.
This are pieces of writing that just came to me.....or that I was forced to write. Please didn't copy my work!
History of Constellations
Have you looked up in the sky lately? Do you see the stars forming shapes? Those shapes are called constellations. Many empires found and named these constellations. They used stories, myths, or legends to example why the constellations are there. Constellations are part of both the Earth’s history and the universe’s history.
The Greeks are famous for their myths. In the myth “The Great Bear” Jupiter, the God of the skies, fell in love with a moral woman named Callisto. Juno, Jupiter’s wife, became jealous of Callisto after she gave birth to Jupiter’s son, Arcus. To get back at Callisto, Juno changed her into a bear. One would think that Callisto would trusted just as before because she was known to be kind and gentle. But no one believed she was still the same kind and caring person. The villagers forced her to leave her child by sending hunters with their dogs after her, while the women of the village took care of her baby. Years later Callisto came back to the village where she once lived. She soon found a hunter about to shot a bird; she soon realized the hunter was her son Arus. But when Arus saw the bear, he didn’t know it was his mother and aimed for it. Jupiter stepped in, even though it had be years since he last saw Callisto in her human form, he still loved her. To protect Callisto from her own son, he hurled her into the night sky. He also changed Arus into a small bear and then put Arus right next to his mother. But Juno was still jealous so she made Neptune, the God of the Sea, to keep the two bears from descending into the ocean like all the other stars. This is the myth the Greeks used to example to themselves why the Great Bear and the Little Bear are the only constellations to never set below the horizon.
They said that their gods made the stars move to make a shape of someone or something that the Gods thought honorable or wanted to honor. The Greeks believed the gods thought a hunter named Orion was honorable enough to be made in a constellation. In ancient Greek and in Greek mythology Orion was a great hunter who accomplished many things. It is said that he killed many beasts. But no one knows just how he died. One theory is that a Scorpios killed him. Now both are up in the night sky as constellations.
Hundreds of cultures have thought that their gods placed their heroes and myths up into the night sky. Were the myths, stories, and legends true? No one truly knows, and no one truly knows which opinion is right. Only you can choice which way you believe.

Raymond's Run
To let someone else win on purpose is usless. If you let the other person win then they never really won. It is better to give the race or sport or any other game you're playing all you've got. It's the fairest way to play, even if you win and they don't. In the story "Raymond's Run," Mr. Pearson tells "Squeaky" or Hazel Elizabeth Deborath Parker to let Gretchen win the race. Squeaky got angry at the suggestion because in her mind she is the best runner and to lose a race would make her look bad. It's one thing to have a friend or a family member tell to not do your best best. It's a whole thing to have your coach tell to.
Slavery
Author's note - this poem is about slavery through a slaves mind.
Why oh why
Everyday I work ‘til I hurt
From sunrise to sunset.
In the coldest morning to the hottest noons
I work so hard
Yet still they say to do more
They force my wife and kids to work
Breaking their bones with whips
Leaving scars for all to see
Only because we are different
We are black and they are white
Oh how I wish to run
But run I can not
For the captured are beaten
I could die
But do they care
No, they would just buy another
What can they say
The cotton and tobacco must be picked
To get the money they carve so much
Then make themselves pigs
With the food, they never work for
The food that we worked so hard to get
They give us barely any clothes to wear
Or shelter to live in
Try to steal food
And you will be beaten
There are no friends in their kind
They have no hearts
They have no mercy
They only have misery
In this life they give us no hope
To me it’s not even a life
It’s not worth living for
But why
Why do they beat us
Why do they hate us
What did we do
We do as told
How are we so different
A color does not matter
Why are we taken from our homes
Our family, friends, and lives
When they are not
Why can’t they work
They have good legs and arms
Why is the South so mean
And the North so kind
I hope there will be a time
When change will come
When we will be freed
When we are no different then them
When we are treated as one
When we are helped
Why oh why
Everyday I work ‘til I hurt
From sunrise to sunset.

The Devil's Bag of Tricks
Temptation is something we all face one way or another. What is temptation you might ask? It is the devil trying to get you to do wrong or not go the way God wants you to. The devil tries to get everyone on his side or to be sinful. He can’t get to me you may say, but it doesn’t matter who you are or what you do the devil’s after you. This temptation has, and will continue to affect the world in the past, present and future.
In the story “The Hundredth Dove” Hugh the fowler faces some of the greatest temptation tricks the devil has. Gold and silver or money as it’s called today cause so many people to fall into the devil’s clutches. The riches he promised will never bring true happiness. The fowler simply said “Neither gold nor silver tempt me, Servo is my motto. I serve my master and my master is the king.” Fame and fortune was the devil’s next try to bring the fowler down to his level. He met only failure when Hugh replied “After the king, I serve the forest. Fame and fortune are no masters here.” It looks like the devil is out of tricks, right? Wrong, he still has his biggest temptation yet, love. It seems like a good deal, I mean Hugh gets a beautiful woman. There’s only one little problem, Lady Columbia is engaged to Hugh’s master the king. For the first time that night the fowler almost gives in to temptation.
“The Hundredth Dove” reminds me of the story from the bible where Jesus is in the desert and the devil tries to get into his mind. In the story Hugh is like Jesus, the devil is Lady Columbia, and God is the King. Just like in the desert Jesus or Hugh knows God is the true king and the right one to follow. If Jesus can fight temptation then we can too. We just have to find the willpower to fight back.

Viruses
Have you ever had a cold or flu? Don’t worry, you’re not the only one. Everyone in the world has mostly likely had one at least once in their life. No matter where you are in the world viruses are there. A virus is a small infectious agent that can replicate only inside the cells of other organisms. (Freudenrich) Viruses can't live on their own. They require a host cell. Once in the host cell the virus takes over. Then continues to releases its protein in order to create new viruses. The cell is no longer a cell, it is a virus. Therefore the virus lets all the new little viruses out in order to attack more cells.
One of the most common viruses to take over is varicella-zoster virus also known as chicken pox. (Dowshen) This virus is spread person to person by direct contact, or through the air by coughing or sneezing. It is common for kids under 12 years old to get chicken pox. The child should stay home while they have this virus, because chicken pox is highly contagious. It causes flu like symptoms, such as fever, cough, headache, and loss of appetite. Chicken pox differs from other viruses by the appearance of a rash with little, itchy, red blisters that start in the lower body, and spread all over. Chicken pox can be prevented by giving the child a vaccine when they are 12 to 15 months old. This virus will go away without treated, although in serious cases death can occur. The most common complication of chicken pox is a bacterial infection of the skin or brain, bones, joints, lungs, and blood. Usually humans will become immune to the virus after having it once. (Coalition)
To a doctor the common cold is called viral upper respiratory tract infection. The common cold can be caused by a variety of viruses. These viruses are spread by direct contact, or inhaling the airborne virus after a sneeze or cough. The common cold effects both children and adults. New cold viruses are always developing, so the human body is not immune to them. To date there is no vaccine to prevent colds. Common symptoms include coughing, sore throat, runny nose, and sneezing. The symptoms of the virus can be treated, but you may have to talk to your doctor before using medications. (Greene) (Doerr)
In both these cases the virus can be both helpful and harmful. Helpful because they help to build our immunity. The symptoms can be annoying, but are usually controlled with home remedies and medications. However a person can get very seriously ill from the chicken pox or common cold. In rare cases, a person can die. (Viruses)
Continuing to learn and understand viruses is important work. Yes they cause the common cold, but they also cause life threatening conditions such as HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), and cancer. Both of these conditions can lead to death. As we learn more, we can work to stop and prevent the spread of viruses. (Virus)

Secrets
Do you have something or know something you don’t want anyone ever knowing or seeing? Or, has one of your friends or family told you something that they trust you not to tell anyone else? Those things are called secrets. They are a secret for a reason; they’re not to be talked about to anyone or shown to anyone. If you let that secret out, it can hurt you, your friends, and the ones you love.
When it comes to secrets my mom always says, “Big or small, you keep them all.” The reason to why this phrase is true because even if the secrets seems small to you it may be big to the person who trusted you to keep that secret. They could also be testing to see if they can trust you. In Shiver By Maggie Stiefvater, Sam trusts Grace with his biggest secret: he’s a werewolf. If Grace was to tell someone and they believed her, Sam would be taken in for testing. He would probably never be seen again. While Grace is battling to protect Sam, other wolfs start causing problems.
Secrets can also bring people closer together. After a while Sam and Grace started to date because of Grace knowing Sam’s secrets. They became very close: “I touched my lips to hers again, and this time, it was a very different sort of kiss. It was six years’ worth of kissing, her lips coming to life under mine, tasting of orange and of desire.” That quote shows how much Sam loves Grace with his mind, body, and soul. But he must be careful because as secrets can bring people together they can tear them apart forever.
With Sam’s life hanging on his secrets, Grace knows to keep them to herself even if it means lying to her friends and family. Unknown to Sam or Grace there are other secrets that are about to pop... secrets that could destroy friendships permanently.

DNA Fingerprinting
Your DNA is what makes you, you. It tells your cell what they are and what they are to do. DNA or deoxyribonucleic acid is the most important part of you because it says who you are.
DNA is found in the cells of all organisms. DNA is made of subunits called nucleotides. Nucleotides are made of a sugar, a phosphate, and a base. The four bases are call adenine, thymine, guanine, and cytosine. The amount of adenine equals the same amount of thymine. This also goes the same for cytosine and guanine. (how dna works)
Each organism is unique, that being said, this means that each organism’s DNA is unique. But all DNA works the same way. So DNA fingerprinting is a way for scientists to say whether or not you were at the scene of the crime. How, by looking at your DNA through your fingerprints. Again each organism has unique patterns that are its DNA.(DNA) (Create a fingerprint, 2000)
You get your DNA from your parents. You get 46 or 23 pairs of chromosomes. You get one pair from your mother and half from your father. Your DNA can also identify family relations or heredity diseases.

Unfairly Taken Away
My name is Galilahi Pascal. I am thirteen years, and I live in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. I am the great, great granddaughter of Marcia Pascal. My heritage is Cherokee, a Native American tribe. I always thought the US government was fair and treated people equally even if they are of different heritage. But I was wrong.
Today in social studies we learned about the Native American Removal, and the Trail of Tears. In order to expand their cotton field’s the settlers of the U.S. pressured the government the move the Natives out of the south. Andrew Jackson agreed with the settlers and in 1814 ordered his troops to fight the Creek nation. He won 22 million acres of Georgia and Alabama, but still the settlers wanted more land. After years of fighting the tribes agreed to treaties the government had offered them. This gave the government control of the lands in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, Mississippi, and Kentucky. Small amounts of the Indians moved into the lands the government gave them to live in, but later the courts said the country still had the right to take their lands for the discovery.
I can’t believe how unfair the government was to my people. We were here first, this was our home, our safe place. Where all our history is, but no. We, the government, believe that we have the right to take away your homes. What did my ancestors ever do to deserve that kind of treatment? All the while the Indian nations tried to work with the government peacefully. They didn’t attack the settlers and they didn’t burn down town. But the “land hungry” settlers did. They also murdered some Cherokee when they were on the trail of tears.
Oh the trail of tears, the name does fit the occasion. When Andrew Jackson became president in 1829, a year after he made the “Indian Removal Act” in 1830. The name fits because it was the act that took away the home lands of the Natives. The Choctaw nation was the first to be moved out of their homes in 1831. The Seminole were then moved in 1832, the Creeks in 1884, Chickasaw in 1837, and finally my people in 1838. Some Natives were able to stay in the home lands after the removal, but not many. About 183,746,000 Native Americans were removed in the end.
The stories of all five Indian nation are unforgettable. The Choctaw left to be free rather than living under a government that treats them unfairly. But then get lost because of a bad guide. The Seminole fought to keep their lands to save themselves for death but failed. The Creeks moved because they were tried of the fighting both physically and vocally with the government. The Chickasaw’s story is probably the best, they got paid to leave and then merged with the Creeks to get nationhood.
My people's story, I believe, is the most heart breaking story because 4,000 Cherokee died on the trail of tear. But before that they were put into camps where some died because of the poor treatment they got. Mean while their homes and town were burned to the ground. Their things and farms were sold to settlers in the lottery. One soldier wrote that four Cherokee were forced into shooting their chief and his children. While the soldier wanted to help he could not. As they march on the trail of tears they had no shoes, and were given blankets that had a disease on them that killed more of my people. They were starving and yet they were forced to pay to get across a river. But some never got across because they were killed by locals while resting. Many others died while waiting to cross.
Why, why, why?????? Why did the settlers force my ancestors to leave?? Just think about what they had to go through to get to their promised land. So many never made it there because of those terrible people who time after time hurt them. If you think that I am over doing it then put yourself in their place.........See it is horrible. So many families taken for one another. Its just to wrong to think about thing that happen that we don’t even know about. I hope you now have a better thought about the Native Americans and what they what through.

Civil War
The date is June 19th, 1863, and I don't know what's go on. My sister fled to the north with her husband two month ago. Then late week he tried to shot my head off when the North soldiers took over our house. What is up with him?????? My family has been nothing but kind to him. What is go on here??? Is there really a new state called West Virgina??? Mom says we are living in it. But how can that be when we live in Virgina and we are part of the South army. Dan keeps saying that we are now part of the North. I didn't know but my main question is why is there a north and a south????
The Earth
The Earth is our home
The home of little animals
Who live throughout its forests
Mountains and hills
It’s the only home we have
And have ever known
SO why do we continue to hurt
By put thing in to it
Garbage in the dirt
And liquids in the seas
Or gases in the air
And killing our follow animals
Who are only do what they know
Why oh why do we hurt our home
The Earth is our home
And the only one we’ve known
The home of little animals
Who live throughout its forests
Mountains and hills
It’s the only home we have
And have ever known
SO why do we continue to hurt
By put thing in to it
Garbage in the dirt
And liquids in the seas
Or gases in the air
And killing our follow animals
Who are only do what they know
Why oh why do we hurt our home
The Earth is our home
And the only one we’ve known
Child Labor
Who could ever guess that children friendly companies like Gap, Nike, and Disney are using child labor to make their products? What about Apple? You know the computers, mobile phones, and of course iPods.
In February 2010 Apple admitted using 15-year-old to make their computers, mobile phones and IPods. About eleven teenagers were found in different factories. Although Apple would not say the name of the offended factories or their location. A majority of Apples products are made in China.
Apples says there are no longer any children being used in their factories, and that they are investigating how an under aged persons was able to gain employment. But are they really? How many other companies have many a change in their ways to that no under age child are working for them? Did Apple just say that so that people would have no problem buying their product?
What I want to know is, is there anyone trying to stop child labor in the world? When will it stop? Can the USA help stop it or are we secretly using child labor too? (Moore)
